A welcome historical novel from one of my favorite mystery writers. True to form, Winspear peppers the plot with details about the working and sacrifice of women in England in the early 20th century and WWI. In this case two school chums find themselves running a farm with skill and warmth and joining the war efforts to escape punishment for feminist and pacifist advocacy. I loved the rich and elegant prose that created these unforgettable portraits of two remarkable women who would be my friends.
